Schedules and Scenes: A Smart Home Security Primer

Normally, “creating a scene” is a bad thing – but when it comes to your smart home security system, creating a scene is exactly what you want to do. With your smart home security mobile phone app, you can control several smart home devices at once with a single command.

Here’s how it works:

First, open your app.

You can create scenes in both the desktop and mobile versions of your smart home security app. Once you’re in, click or tap on the emPower tab, then choose Scenes. You’ll see four pre-set Scenes (Home, Away, Sleep, Wake Up). You can edit all of these directly from the app.

Then, choose a scene.

What do these scenes do? One example is your Away scene; when you tap on it, your smart home security system will arm itself immediately. At the very same time, your front door will lock, your garage will close and your thermostat will adjust itself to a temperature that will save on energy while you’re gone for the day.

Customize more scenes.

While the four main scenes are great on their own, you can also create customized scenes that you dream up for yourself. One popular choice is a “Movie” scene, which makes things comfortable for a cozy night in. Simply “Create New Scene,” enter what you’d like to call it (you don’t have to call it “Movie”). Then, click on the three-arrowed icon. You’ll see a drop-down menu of icons to choose from, along with a choice of colors for this scene.

Now, you get to specify what your scene will do. Once you’ve created the button, you’ll see a list of all your connected smart home devices. To include any device in the scene you’re creating, check the circle to the left of it and specify what you want the device to do. Examples: Arm the system, turn down the temperature, turn certain lights off, even pull down the shades (if they’re connected). Then, tap save to confirm your scene. Now, it’s ready to be used whenever you need it.
